a. Basic Operation

The iPad screen is an electronic canvas on which you can draw, write and/or type text to produce a screen image. You can also import images/photos, maps and icons to add and build up your screen image.

Or, you could open documents (such as .pdf, .doc, .xls and .ppt files) and paste a section of the document to your screen image for marking up.

Once you have pasted content and started to compose your screen image, you can re-organize its layout using a selection tool which allows you to select areas of the screen image, cut or copy that area and paste it elsewhere.

You can resize, rotate and re-position the copy of the selected area before pasting it back to the screen image.

The screen image can then be saved to a png file. Or, you could email it or upload to Facebook. Alternatively, using the SELECT BOX, you could send a selected area of the screen image rather than the whole screen.

At the top of the screen is the MAIN TOOLBAR. Tap a button on the MAIN TOOLBAR to enter a mode (DRAW, WRITE, TYPE or SELECT) or activate a feature. (See below for a description of the MAIN TOOLBAR buttons).

If you need help on any button, tap and hold the button (long press) and its HELP SCREEN will appear. Tap the button again to close the help screen or tap the CLOSE button on the help screen.

b. Main Toolbar

Use the first group of buttons as shown below to operate the basic modes: DRAW, TYPE, WRITE and SELECT as briefly described in the table below.

Tap any button icon in the left column of the table for its HELP SCREEN.

DRAW MODE
Features freestyle finger drawing and writing directly on screen with quick-change pen type (pen, highlighter or eraser), color selection and line widths.
TYPE MODE
Type into a text box which can be placed and pasted on to the screen. Full font support including colors and sizes. Supports copy, cut and paste from other iPad text-based apps. For example copying text from Safari.
WRITE MODE
Write small feature. Although you can write in DRAW MODE, WRITE MODE lets you write naturally in a larger space and the writing is automatically scaled down. Maximizes the use of screen space for writing notes. Auto-advance feature lets you write continuously.
SELECT MODE
Lets you copy areas of the screen into a selection box which can then be resized, rotated and/or re-positioned and pasted back on to the screen. Options to copy, cut or crop the selected area.

Use the second group of buttons on the MAIN TOOLBAR to import content to build up your screen image. You can import photos, maps and icons, or open a document (.pdf, .doc, .xls or .ppt) and import a section.

Tap any button icon in the left column of the table for its HELP SCREEN.

MAPS
Built in map function to generate maps which you can paste on to your screen image.
DOCS Import .pdf, .doc, .xls and .ppt files from which you can paste a section on the screen for mark-up and annotation. Also supports the standard iPad "Open in?." functionality which allows you to open documents from other apps.
IMAGES
Import photos from the iPad photo album and camera roll. You can import and paste to fit the screen or import into the SELECT BOX for re-sizing and positioning.
ICONS
Download free icons from the Daydex website, and/or customize your own.

The third group of buttons on the MAIN TOOLBAR are useful features for you to email your screen image, upload it to Facebook, apply backgrounds, customize the app, save your screen image to files and manage those files.

Tap any button icon in the left column of the table for its HELP SCREEN.

EXPORT
Export lets you send your screen as a png or jpg file by email. You can also upload directly to Facebook.
BACKGROUNDS
Use the preset backgrounds for a ruled or grid background. Backgrounds are an underlay which are not affected as you edit the screen image. Also useful for filling in forms and marking up a document or image. Any file can be opened as a background, and merged back into the screen image as needed.
SETTINGS
Settings for customizing the app, for example showing and hiding stretch arrowhead handles, tint boxes, file confirmations, grid sizes, etc
FILES
File handling options for opening, saving, deleting and renaming files.
NEW
Clears screen image to start a fresh project. Prompts to clear background if a background is present.

Bottom Buttons

The SHOWTOOLBARS button (3) at the bottom center of the screen is used to hide all the toolbars. Tap the button to hide and again to unhide the toolbars.

If you make any changes to the screen (for example, pasting the SELECT BOX), you can tap the UNDO (1) button to reverse the change.

Similarly, tap the REDO (2) button to redo the last undo.

The FILES NAVIGATION TOOLBAR (4) displays the filename of the current file and quick save buttons as well as buttons for quickly opening the next and previous files.

  8. I have an image which I use frequently. Can I add it to the icon library?

a. How do I move something I've drawn on the screen?

Use the SELECT MODE. First select the area to be moved by positioning the SELECT BOX over the area and adjust to fit. Tap the CUT button, drag the SELECT BOX to the new location and tap the PASTE button.

b. I've typed some text in the text box but it's not showing on the screen. Why has it disappeared?

You may have tapped another button without pasting the text first. The typed text has not disappeared, it's still in the TEXT BOX. Simply tap the TYPE button and the TEXT BOX will appear again. Remember to tap the PASTE button to paste the text on to the screen canvas.

c. The toolbars have disappeared. How can I get it back?

Tap the SHOWTOOLBARS button at the bottom of the screen to hide/unhide the toolbars.
Some features may have a SECONDARY TOOLBAR located below the MAIN TOOLBAR. You can roll up the SECONDARY TOOLBAR and hide the MAIN TOOLBAR to view more screen space.

Tap the MENU UP button to "roll up" the SECONDARY TOOLBAR and hide the MAIN TOOLBAR.
Tap the MENU DOWN button to restore the MAIN TOOLBAR.
See the DRAW MODE help screens for another example.

d. I've opened a file as a background and drawn over it, but when I saved my work, the background is gone. What happened to the background?

Remember to MERGE the background with your screen image BEFORE saving your work.

e. What is the double-tap used for?

In SELECT MODE, TYPE, WRITE, MAPS, DOCS, IMAGES and ICONS, a box is used to hold a copy of the screen area, text, map etc. The box contents will eventually be PASTED on to the screen image.

Generally, double-tap outside the box area to paste the contents of the box as a convenient and quick alternative to tapping the PASTE button.

In WRITE MODE, double-tap the screen outside both TARGET and WRITE BOXES to paste the contents of the TARGET BOX and advance the TARGET BOX.

In TYPE MODE, double-tap the screen outside the TEXT BOX to paste the text in the TEXT BOX on to the screen. Similarly with MAPS, DOCS, IMAGES (if you select resizable image) and ICONS.

In SELECT MODE, if the SELECT BOX is empty, the screen area under the SELECT BOX will be copied into the SELECT BOX if you double-tap the screen outside the box. Otherwise, if the SELECT BOX has an image, it will be PASTED on to the screen.

f. I've tapped the PASTE button to paste an image but nothing seems to have happened. Where is the pasted image?

It's under the BOX which contained the copy of your image. Just drag the BOX away and you will see the image on the screen.

Note that the BOXES are not cleared automatically after pasting (except the WRITE MODE TARGET BOX) as you may wish to re-use the content in another location or edit it.

g. When I use the eraser, why does it appear away from my finger?

The eraser offset is intentional so that your finger does not obstruct what you are trying to erase. The offset is adjustable under the PEN SETTINGS.

h. I have an image which I use frequently. Can I add it to the icon library?

Yes. You can either transfer the image (for example, your logo) using iTunes (see the ICONS HELP screen), or if you can use the SELECT MODE to export it to the icon library.
